Phil is a Cinematographer who, after an apprenticeship with Garrett Brown, inventor of the Steadicam, worked with the renowned documentarian, Barbara Kopple. Both of the films he worked on with her, “Harlan County USA” and “American Dream,” won Academy Awards. This brought Phil fame for his realistic approach to photography, be it still or motion picture. Over the years he has developed close working relationships with a number of independent filmmakers including Steve Buscemi, Alexandre Rockwell and Rob Zombie. Throughout the course of his career his goal as a photographer has been to unravel layers of artifice and self-defense to display his guileless subjects’ inner feelings.
